Game 5: 4 April at Southwest at 4:30 (1-0 with lightning ending match with 32:56 left)
Just another weird early spring match arrived as lightning brought an abrupt end to this one. The first half ended 0-0 as we failed to follow two shots that came off the keeper and just sat for a few moments.
More importantly though after a few defenders falling (a theme of the first half), Briley hit a nice hard ground shot to the front post. Out of nowhere sprang Alex Moss at the last second to clear the ball away, saving a goal. Check it out! BWhite probably would have named her the BWhite Player of the Match on that play alone, but she was solid in the back throughout the half during tough conditions. She also made several runs into the front third of the field from right back.
We knew lightning was within 20 miles when we started the second half. We did seem to play more with a sense of urgency. When Marge found Hallie who just hit a beautiful shot from 25 to beat the keeper, we seemed as if we had just grabbed the game-winner. Sure enough, the game was called a few minutes later.
Just from checking out the stats, all of us can probably see that we were a quart low on energy tonight. We generated all of 5 shots in the first half with a couple of corners. Not enough for as much talent as we run out there.
Southwest does a nice job of getting behind the ball, and their talent does limit a lot of what teams try to do. Their skill, however, does not explain most of what took place out their first half on our side of the ball.
