State Final

Game 21: 27 May at Bethel College vs. BV Southwest (0-2)

It's over—after 7 straight we fell to the T-Wolves, all in the blink of an eye.

We seemed to be having most of the opportunity and most of the possession, but then the T-Wolves got a ball forward into the box where we fouled. PK.

Less than 3 minutes later Macy Ruffalo hit this beautiful, tough-angle shot that was probably a cross, but still, made it 2-0—the final score.

We kept battling, hit a couple of posts, but we just couldn't get a ball into the net. Southwest stayed organized, changed formations at a key moment to finish off the win.

Congrats to Coach Pendleton and his girls—great season, a great state title.

Our seniors were just a phenomenal team-first group that should leave that legacy for us to build on for next year. They always played hard, and played for one another. And they cared about our school and our program. Thank you, Caroline Romme and Brigid Linder and Anna Woltering and Itsy McCormick and Katelyn Heying and Hania Crow and Chyna Schiltz-Ragsdale. It was an honor to coach you.

State Semi-finals

Game 20: 26 May at Bethel College vs Maize (3-0)

Ok, 3-0 might be a little deceiving.

Let's start with the BWhite Player of the Match—Nicole McEnroe.  Maize is winning the midfield early in the match.  They have Hallie doubled every time she receives a ball.  They are beating us to most balls.  So we are a little on our heels when they win a ball from Hallie, nicely move it through their midfield and then over Romme (and the ball also beats Crow—not good!) leaving their best 1 v 1 with Nicole. She comes out big, defeats the shot with an unreal kick save. Check it out!

That play got us jazzed, now ready to play. A short time later we get a corner that changes the game. We head the ball down in the box for Kyli to get the ball pushed towards goal. Their defender stops the shot with her hand: red card, PK. We go up 1-0, and they have to play the rest of the match with 10 players. So.

We added a nice corner-kick goal and a breakaway at the beginning of the second half before just coasting.

Probably our frosh, as a group, had their best match of the year—Goza saved a sure goal; Yanes was our best center midfielder; Kimball brilliant and so tough up top; Moira played her most physical match of the year; Carl Jr. shut down the side; Pam gave us good play underneath, at center mid, and at defensive center midfield; and Molly added another clean sheet, although she needs to thank Kate. Check it out!

Today will be another intense, physical match. Southwest is a very good team who is well coached and who knows us—as well as we know ourselves.

Second Half:

Catch-it Kansas

NEWTON, Kansas. Maize high school girls’ soccer team has been to state nine years in a row, and for nearly a decade has been the high standard of soccer in Wichita. St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ soccer team has won state seven years in a row and is known as the well-established power of Class 5A. Friday night in Joe Goering stadium was where one of the dynasties fell as Aquinas powered past Maize 3-0.
Mallory Heying was the first to score for Aquinas on a penalty shot early in the first half. It was just five minutes later when undoubtedly the most incredible play of the game occurred when Senior Katelyn Heying scored with a header with an off the corner kick assist from Sophomore Hallie Klanke.
“We play really well together, we feed off of each other,” said Klanke. “We know what each other will do and what we need to do for each other,” said Heying.
Which proved to be true throughout the game.
Aquinas came out fired up in the second half and scored within a minute, reversing the roles of Heying and Klanke, this time Klanke scored off the assist from Heying.
Maize Senior Raquelle Hardin, had 10 saves from the 20 shots fired from Aquinas. The goals were the most allowed by Hardin in a single game this season.
Maize finishes its season 15-4, while Aquinas will face Blue Valley Southwest tomorrow trying to earn its eighth straight state title and 17th overall.
“The tradition helps us, the girls believe and they expect it to happen,” said head coach, Craig Ewing. “We’ve got consistency.”
Serving his 30th year as a head coach, Ewing has been at St. Thomas since the program started. So he is familiar with consistency.

“I have a consistent staff, so we have an overall same philosophy,” said Ewing. “That’s been one of our keys to success is to have a defensive and offensive philosophy and everyone buys in.”

State Quarters

23 May at STA in Quarterfinals vs. Shawnee Heights (10-0)

Ok, you don't see a lot of spreads in the State Quarterfinals, but that is just what the girls did tonight against a Shawnee Heights team who had just knocked off undefeated De Soto, fallen only 1-0 to Washburn Rural—so unexpected.

What we did do was attack the baseline early and often; we framed well, picking up some easy goals.  I believe we cashed 4 STA balls in the first half.  And less than 2 minutes in Hania got us on the board following Brigid's nice corner-like deadball. Early goals have been one of our best formulas all year: when we get them, we tend to win.

It was a night where a lot of things just went well early.  It reminded me of our Liberty game from Mo-Kan—just an unexplainable spread against a pretty decent team. (Let's make sure we don't have a similar follow-up game to the Liberty one.)

Freshman Maggie Ryan got her first varsity minutes tonight, playing some center midfield and some defensive center midfield.  She played well.

And her cousin, Kyli Jackson was named BWhite Player of the Match. Her back post header for the goal capped off a great match where she won ball after ball and just kept moving the ball quickly through our midfield.

Production was off the charts: Yes, Hallie had 3 goals and 2 assists, but Isa had a goal and an assist; Elle a goal and an assist; Katelyn, a goal, an assist and a dummy leading to a goal, Brigid had 3 assists from left back, one a t-ball; Madison and Marge and Natalie created dummies that lead to goals; Alex was in the 18 when she slipped Elle that nice ball she finished. We just constantly got groups forward, coordinated in their attacks. It was good soccer and fun to watch.

Now, if we can just figure out the corner in the next two days, who knows?

The fact that Heights did not get a shot off is a tribute to Hamms' "we all play defense," and in this one we all did. We played two sets of 4 in the back, 2 keepers. So we had an intensity and a desire to take away space throughout the lineup.

We now get the rematch of last year's state semi-final against Maize. They just might be interested in a little revenge. We better be ready to go.

We stand 15-3-1, heading to our 14th straight final four—that's just nuts and pretty unexplainable. In our previous 13 trips, we have tallied 10 State titles, 2 State runner-ups and a third place finish.
